Revitalization Efforts for a Historic High-Rise in Berlin
The landmarked headquarters of the Senate Department for Urban Development, Construction, and Housing underwent a comprehensive renovation. A resource-conscious construction method was prioritized to ensure the long-term usability of the ageing building. For the restoration of the defining facade of what was once Berlin’s tallest office high-rise, 3,500 custom-designed 3D components made of glassfibre reinforced concrete were installed. Specially tailored L- and V-shaped elements in ivory were supplied as ready-to-mount components. These suspended facade elements maintain material integrity and embody a timeless design, in line with the building’s historic character. This thoughtful process preserved the historically significant exterior while artfully merging conservation with contemporary architectural principles. The durable concrete elements facilitated an architecturally striking modernization of the building envelope while extending the building’s service life. Photos: Ditz Fejer
