Sculpturally folded vaults

Blue Bottle Coffee in the Stanford Shopping City in the heart of Palo Alto in California was awarded the AIA San Francisco Design Award 2020 in the Interior Design category. Architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson took advantage of the unusually narrow and elevated space for sculpturally folded vaults that accentuate the verticality of the space and bring natural light into the café. Inspired by the crisp, geometric lines as well as the curved elements, their design team created a bright venue offering tranquillity and contemplation in the bustling shopping center.

This urban, minimalist oasis emphasizes the combination of different materials. The new café features ivory öko skin slats for both the interior and exterior areas. The subdued colors visually highlight the volume of the space and are harmoniously blended into the overall look. Photos: Adam Rouse
