The design brief for Perth College’s Early Years Facility project called for materials that are green, have longevity and suit principles of the School’s Reggio Emilia educational philosophy. These principles include the use of natural materials, which resulted in a choice of timber cladding to external protected faces and left the question of what could be used to clad the external unprotected faces. The chosen product was to also sufficiently contrast with the two existing and adjoining buildings, one of which is a red brick heritage listed building.
fibreC as the cladding solution to the external unprotected faces met all required criteria for this project. Its raw aesthetic and simple forms provide a modern contrast to the existing buildings while its natural appearance, as it in fact consists largely of mineral components, comfortably abuts the timber cladding. Some of its other qualities, such as it having long-term durability and being a low maintenance product with anti-graffiti properties, made fibreC particularly appealing for the Donaldson + Warn Architects as a cladding solution for an educational facility.
The Early Years Facility project for Perth College was the first in West Australia to use fibreC as an external cladding product and both client and Architect deem it a successful choice.
